How your shipping rate is calculated

Four things set the price of every package.

Step 1

Weigh the package

The actual weight of your product plus the box, filler and labels.

Step 2

Measure the box

Carriers also price by size, called dimensional weight.

L × W × H ÷ 166 (in) or ÷ 6,000 (cm)
Step 3

Take the greater weight

Whichever is greater becomes the billable weight, matched to a rate band up to 20 lb (9.08 kg).

Step 4

Apply the zone

The farther the destination from the warehouse, the higher the zone and the rate. Learn how zones are set.

Example

An 8 oz item in a 6 × 4 × 2 in box has a dimensional weight of 0.29 lb, so it is billed at its actual 0.5 lb. Shipped to Zone 5, the rate is $4.84.

Ways to lower your shipping cost

Right-size your packaging

A smaller box lowers dimensional weight and can drop a package into a cheaper rate band.

Shipping Calculator FAQs

How accurate is this shipping estimate?

It uses our current US carrier rate card, matched to your package's billable weight and zone. The final rate depends on your confirmed zone and any carrier surcharges, which your account manager reviews with you before you ship.

What is a shipping zone?

Carriers group US destinations into zones 1 to 8 based on the distance from the warehouse. Zone 1 is the closest and zone 8 is the farthest, and the rate rises as the zone goes up.

What is dimensional weight?

It is the weight carriers assign based on box size. In inches, multiply length, width and height and divide by 166 to get pounds. In centimeters, divide by 6,000 to get kilograms. You pay for whichever is greater, the actual weight or the dimensional weight.

Does the estimate include pick and pack?

No. The calculator shows shipping only. Pick and pack, storage and custom packaging are quoted separately, so request a quote to see your full cost per order.

What if my package is outside the calculator?

The calculator shows online rates for billable weights up to 9.08 kg (20 lb). Heavier packages, and large, light boxes billed above that because of dimensional weight, get a custom quote from our team. The same goes for international orders. Just request a quote.

How can I lower my shipping costs?

Use the smallest box that protects your product to keep dimensional weight down. With warehouses in New Jersey and California, you can also hold stock on both coasts so more orders ship to nearby, lower zones.
